About a year ago, I found myself out of work. I was entering the job market for the first time in over six years. I was a little nervous, but I had been a senior manager with extensive hiring experience, so I figured I could just switch around to the other side of the desk without too much of a problem.
I had never before utilized the Internet for job searching, so I was a bit confused as to where to start, but, on the other hand, I was quite internet savvy, so I figured it couldn’t be that challenging. I knew about the major job sites out there already, so I started going to them to look for work. How hard could it be?
As it turned out, there was a lot to it - and I felt like I was practically drowning in information. As it turned out the skills that served me well for web surfing all those years were actually bad habits when it came to job hunting.
I would spend hours and hours each day browsing the sites and applying for jobs. To make sure I saw all the jobs out there, I would randomly jump from one site to another with no logic or order behind what I was doing.
My friends and family noticed how much time I was putting into job searching and would ask why I wasn’t making much progress.
Of course, this made me feel even worse. What was I doing wrong? Still, I persevered. It was only a matter of time - right? But how much time would it take?
I was growing more and more frustrated, not knowing what I was doing wrong - and what more I could do? There are only so many hours in a day. I was under a lot of pressure and started to get depressed.
